Want to make an oven-baked dish, defrost bread or grill your favourite vegetables? If you choose a combination microwave oven, you can do it all with one handy appliance. In this blog, you’ll read more about all the different functions of this appliance, and we explain exactly what the symbols on your combi microwave mean.

The fan oven (convection) function on your combination microwave oven

With the fan oven function, the fan blows hot air at a steady rate and distributes the heat evenly throughout your combination microwave oven. This not only gives you a crisp finish but also lets you heat up multiple dishes at once. The biggest difference from other functions, such as top and bottom heat, is that the fan oven function heats all the walls at the same time. This allows you to regulate the temperature very precisely. Heating several meals, oven dishes or other foods at once is easy in this setting. How do you recognise the fan oven function on your combination microwave oven? Look among the symbols for the fan icon. That’s the sign for a fan oven. Sometimes you’ll see a fan with a line underneath or above the symbol. That’s the top/bottom heat function, which is not the same as the fan oven function. Do you have an oven? Then you’ll recognise these same symbols on your electric oven or fan oven. We’re also happy to help you understand what the symbols on your oven mean.

The main difference between the fan oven function and bottom and top heat is that, with the latter, the heat only comes from below and above, meaning the hot air doesn’t circulate evenly through the combination microwave oven. So, what do you use this setting for? Switch on the top heat when you want to gratinate a dish or give a meal a crisp finish. Choose the bottom heat function to bake a cake or quiche. This setting bakes cakes through properly and creates a deliciously crisp pastry base, like with pizza.

How to use the grill function on your combination microwave oven

The image shows a black oven icon on a light grey background. The icon features a square outline with a zigzag line at the top.

A combination microwave oven with a grill function is always a good idea. Because as well as reheating food, defrosting meat and popping popcorn, the grill function turns your combination microwave into a barbecue. Just like on a barbecue, the grill setting browns the outside of the food nicely and cooks it slowly on the inside. If you use a grill rack, you place the food even closer to the heat source and get attractive grill marks.

Inside an oven, meat roasts on a dark pan, under an orange heating element. The element glows brightly, casting light on the food.

How to use the grill function on your combination microwave oven:

  1. Prepare your meat or vegetables as you normally would.
  2. Place the ingredient on the rack in your microwave and put a heat-resistant plate under the rack to catch any drips.
  3. Set the combination microwave oven to the grill setting, choose the number of minutes and press ‘start’.
  4. When the timer goes off, it’s time to enjoy.

The defrost function on your combination microwave oven

Looking for the defrost function on your combination microwave oven? Look for a symbol with a snowflake and a droplet. That is the defrost function. This function is useful for defrosting products without cooking them through. In this way, you don’t cook the product, but bring it back up to temperature. A combination microwave oven with pizza setting/crisp function

Two black icons on a white background. One shows a fan in a square. The other shows heat waves above a line in a square.

Anyone who wants to use this pizza/crisp function mainly loves a crispy base. This setting ensures that extra hot air circulates at the bottom of the microwave oven. Only then will you get the base crispy. How do you recognise the pizza setting? Look for the fan oven symbol (fan) with a horizontal line underneath it.
