Together striving for greater sustainability

As Europe's largest retailer in consumer electronics, we want to take a leading role in tackling the major global challenges facing people, communities, and the environment.

Our objectives

A logo displays "BETTER WAY" in white on a green rectangle, set against a light gray background.

We strive for a climate-neutral shopping experience. That’s why we have set ambitious goals to reduce our emissions. We are currently validating our objectives with the Science Based Targets Initiative. This initiative scientifically aligns companies with the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Most of our emissions arise from the products we sell: from production and transport to usage and the end-of-life phase, including emissions during recycling or reuse. As a retailer, we leverage our scale to reduce the CO2 emissions of our company and our customers. We are making agreements with suppliers for more sustainable production and increasing the share of sustainable products in our range. We achieve this under our BetterWay label.

For products that have a more sustainable character within their category, we use the BetterWay label. Learn more about BetterWay.

MediaMarkt is committed to offering products and services that extend the lifespan of products, such as repairs and the option for trade-ins. This allows products or materials to have a second life. We also ensure responsible processing of electronic waste.

Additionally, Ceconomy, the parent company of MediaMarkt, has signed the EU Sustainable Consumption Pledge. This sets clear objectives for our suppliers: by 2027, 80% of them must have established their own CO2 reduction targets in line with the Paris Agreement. Our aim is also to include at least 6,000 unique products with the BetterWay label in our range by 2026.

Our sustainability report

In our financial year 2022/2023, we achieved several key milestones, including:

  • A 39% reduction in our Scope 1 and 2 operations, partly due to energy-saving initiatives and increasing the share of green energy to 92%.
  • Offering CO2-neutral deliveries in 34 European cities.
  • An 8% decrease in our Scope 3 activities.
  • Nearly 5,000 BetterWay products in our range.
  • The sale of over 10,000 refurbished products.
  • 218,000 trade-ins of products.
  • 3.2 million repairs of electrical products.

We have made significant strides in recent years towards making our supply chains more sustainable, but there is still work to be done. We continuously strive to improve our processes and practices, always with an eye on a more sustainable future

Your old equipment contains more valuable raw materials than you might think, materials that can be recovered and reused through recycling. This helps prevent unnecessary extraction of new resources. However, electronic devices also contain harmful substances that must not end up in the environment.
