Together striving for greater sustainability

In general, products in our BetterWay programme are more energy efficient, more durable, easier to repair, or contain certified recycled materials. The specific requirements for inclusion in the BetterWay programme depend on the product category. For example, a washing machine may qualify because it is most energy efficient, an accessory because it contains certified recycled materials, and a computer because it meets recognised third-party sustainability standards. In our stores, products in our BetterWay assortment feature a dedicated category tag on the electronic price tag. Outstanding environmental performance under the EU Energy Label

The EU Energy Label is the official European label for energy efficiency and other product-specific performance information. It is based on standardised EU test methods and provides comparable information on aspects such as energy consumption, water consumption, noise emissions, repairability or durability, depending on the product category. Products in our BetterWay programme are only included if they achieve the highest available energy efficiency class under the EU Energy Label – Class A on the current label or Class A+++ where the previous label is still in use, demonstrating outstanding environmental performance. For smartphones and tablets, as the energy use is relatively low, BetterWay considers the repairability and durability ratings shown on the EU Energy Label. The repairability rating is based on the repairability index, which ranges from A (most repairable) to E (least repairable) and takes into account factors such as disassembly, fasteners, tools, spare parts availability, software update support and the availability of repair information. The durability rating is based on the repeated free-fall reliability class, which measures a device’s resistance to impact through standardised drop tests. It also ranges from A (most robust) to E (least robust).

National or regional environmental labelling schemes

Independent organisations define sustainability requirements for various product categories and verify whether products meet established standards for aspects such as energy efficiency, recyclability, durability, hazardous substances, and responsible sourcing. When selecting products for our BetterWay programme, we rely on recognised third-party certifications. For IT products such as laptops and printers, these include Blue Angel, EPEAT, and TCO Certified. Products containing recycled materials qualify only if their recycled content has been certified under recognised certification schemes, including the Global Recycled Standard (GRS), the Recycled Claim Standard (RCS), and the Recycled Content Standard (SCS).

Repair

Repairing a device instead of replacing it can significantly extend its lifetime. The longer a product stays in use, the longer the raw materials and energy already invested in manufacturing continue to provide value. Our repair services make it easier to keep your favourite devices running for longer – from quick fixes to expert repairs.

Trade-in

Many devices still have value when they're no longer needed by their owner. With our trade-in service, you can return eligible devices, giving them the chance to be refurbished and used again. If reuse is no longer possible, valuable raw materials can still be recovered through recycling.

Recycling

Even when a device reaches the end of its life, its story doesn't have to end there. Electronic devices contain valuable raw materials such as copper, aluminium and rare earth elements that can often be recovered through recycling. Return your old tech to us and we'll ensure it is collected, helping recover valuable materials for future use while ensuring the safe handling of materials that cannot be reused.
