Apple has launched a new generation of over-ear headphones with the AirPods Max 2. In this comparison, you’ll discover what has changed compared to the original AirPods Max, such as the H2 chip, improved noise cancelling and extra features for calls.

AirPods Max vs. Max 2: short summary of the differences

Apple is introducing a new generation of its over-ear headphones: the AirPods Max 2. These are the main differences between the AirPods Max 2 and the first-generation AirPods Max:

  • H2 chip: replaces the H1 chip in the AirPods Max and delivers more powerful audio processing.
  • Active Noise Cancelling (ANC): the AirPods Max 2 filter out background noise even more effectively than the 1st generation AirPods Max.
  • Adaptive Audio: automatically switches between ANC and Transparency mode depending on your surroundings.
  • Conversation Awareness: automatically lowers the volume when you talk to someone.
  • Live Translation: translates other languages live during a conversation.

The main difference between the AirPods Max and the AirPods Max 2 lies in the chip. The first generation uses the H1 chip, while the AirPods Max 2 are equipped with the newer H2 chip for improved audio processing. Noise cancelling is more precise and the headphones can adapt better to your surroundings. Voices during calls are filtered more clearly, and the headphones learn how loudly you usually listen so they can adjust the volume automatically. In addition, the AirPods Max 2 use Bluetooth 5.3 instead of Bluetooth 5.0 for a more stable connection and reduced audio delay.

Active Noise Cancelling and Adaptive Audio

Just like the AirPods 4, the AirPods Max 2 use the H2 chip to filter ambient noise more precisely. Distracting sounds such as traffic or background noise are therefore suppressed more effectively. New is Adaptive Audio. This feature automatically adjusts the balance between noise cancelling and Transparency mode based on your surroundings. In a quiet environment, noise cancelling remains active, while in situations where you need to hear what’s going on around you, the noise-cancelling headphones automatically let in more ambient sound. As a result, you’ll need to switch between listening modes manually less often.

What is noise cancelling?

Communication during calls

With Conversation Awareness, the AirPods Max 2 automatically lower the volume when you start talking and let in more ambient sound, so you can have a conversation without taking off your headphones. Once your conversation has finished, the volume returns to its previous level. In addition, the AirPods Max 2 support Live Translation via Apple Intelligence, allowing you to hold a conversation even when you don’t speak the same language.

Bluetooth support

The AirPods Max 2 support Bluetooth 5.3, while the original AirPods Max use Bluetooth 5.0. This newer Bluetooth version provides a more stable connection and lower latency, which can be noticeable when watching videos or playing games. The connection also tends to be more reliable in busy places where many wireless signals are active, such as on the train, at an airport or in the office.

Although the AirPods Max 2 add new features, many important characteristics remain the same as with the original AirPods Max. These are the main similarities:

  • Design: both models have the same over-ear design with aluminium ear cups and a headband made from breathable mesh fabric. The AirPods Max and Max 2 are available in Midnight, Starlight, Blue, Purple and Orange.
  • Battery life: both the AirPods Max and AirPods Max 2 offer up to 20 hours of listening time with noise cancelling.
  • Siri: both headphones work with Siri via voice commands, for example to start music, adjust the volume or send messages on your iPhone.

  • Controls: the Digital Crown (control button) remains the same. You can use it to play or pause music, take a photo or video, and mute or unmute the microphone during a call.
  • Switching between devices: both AirPods Max models switch automatically between Apple devices linked to the same Apple ID, such as an iPhone, iPad or Mac.
  • Personal engraving: just like with the first generation, you can have the AirPods Max 2 engraved with a personal inscription, such as your name.
