Jasper11 SEPTEMBER 2025

During the Apple Event in September 2025, the iPhone 17 was officially unveiled, available in both Pro and Pro Max versions, as well as the iPhone Air. Just as there was a difference between the iPhone 16 and the 15, the new iPhone 17 builds on the iPhone 16 and introduces clear improvements, such as the new Ceramic Shield 2, a battery that not only lasts all day but also charges faster, and the latest version of iOS. The most significant innovations, however, are:

  • Larger and brighter display: 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR with up to 3,000 nits, compared with 6.1 inches and 2,000 nits on the iPhone 16.
  • Camera upgrade: the iPhone 17 comes with 48MP Fusion Main and 48MP Ultra-Wide cameras, delivering 4 times the resolution, plus a new 18MP Centre Stage front camera. The iPhone 16 featured a 48MP + 12MP dual set-up and a 12MP selfie camera.
  • New chip: A19 and A19 Pro processors with Apple Intelligence, offering smoother performance compared with the A18 of the previous generation.

The display on the new iPhone is larger and smoother than that of the iPhone 16. You now get a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display with slimmer bezels, compared with 6.1 inches on the iPhone 16. Brightness has also seen a major boost: with peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits and a 7-layer anti-reflective coating, the screen is easier to read both indoors and outdoors. While the iPhone 16 offered up to 2,000 nits peak brightness, the iPhone 17 lets you see more detail in bright sunlight. Thanks to ProMotion technology, the iPhone 17 also supports an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz, delivering smooth scrolling, immersive gaming, and fluid content viewing.

The design of the iPhone 17 has also been refreshed. The iPhone 17, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air feature rounded contours and a Ceramic Shield 2 coating that is 3 times more resistant to scratches than on the iPhone 16. The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max go even further with a unibody design and Ceramic Shield on both the front and back. Once again, you can choose your favourite iPhone 17 from a range of colours. The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus were available in Black, White, Pink, Teal and Ultramarine, while the iPhone 17 comes in Black, White, Mist Blue, Lavender and Sage. The iPhone 16 Pro was offered in White, Black, Natural and Desert, whereas the iPhone 17 Pro models introduce stylish finishes in Silver, Deep Blue and Cosmic Orange.

The camera performances of the iPhone 16 and 17 highlighted

The main camera on the iPhone 17 takes a clear step forward with a 48MP Dual Fusion system: 2 48MP lenses working together to deliver richer colours and sharp detail from every angle. The iPhone Air opts for a slimmer setup with a single 48MP Fusion main camera. Both the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max also feature a 48MP dual-lens system, with the Pro Max offering the widest zoom range yet: up to 16x in optical quality. By comparison, the iPhone 16 combined a 48MP main camera with a 12MP Ultra-Wide.

For video calls and vlogging, the iPhone 17 line-up comes equipped with an 18MP Center Stage front camera, which automatically frames the subject you want to keep in view and delivers stable footage. The iPhone 16 models also produced sharp selfies, though with a 12MP front camera.

The new iPhone 17 chip

The iPhone 17 is powered by the A19 chip with Neural Accelerators for faster AI processing. New this year is hardware-accelerated ray tracing, which makes graphically intensive games and apps run more smoothly, fully taking advantage of the 120fps refresh rate. The chip also supports Apple Intelligence features such as Live Translation, enabling real-time translations during calls, emails, and FaceTime. With the A19 processor, the iPhone 17 is faster, more powerful, and more energy efficient than its predecessors.

The iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are equipped with the even more powerful A19 Pro chip. By comparison, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus used the A18 chip, while the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max were powered by the A18 Pro. The A18 and its Pro version are slightly less capable in AI tasks, but, like the A19 chip, they remain more than capable of handling gaming, multitasking, and demanding apps.

What are the battery performances of the iPhone 17 and 16?

The iPhone 17 offers greater battery capacity compared with the iPhone 16. When playing video, the standard model lasts up to 30 hours, whereas the iPhone 16 reaches up to 22 hours. Both models use a built-in lithium-ion battery and support fast charging via USB-C. Charging speed has been improved on the iPhone 17: with a 40W adapter you can reach around 50% in about 20 minutes, compared with roughly 30 minutes on the iPhone 16, which uses a 20W adapter.

There is also a difference between the e models: although the iPhone 17e and iPhone 16e offer the same battery life of up to 26 hours of video playback, the iPhone 17e supports MagSafe chargers and accessories.

Our advice on the differences between the iPhone 17 and 16

If you’re looking for an iPhone with strong performance, a sharp display, and solid cameras, the iPhone 16 remains an excellent choice. However, if you want the latest Apple has to offer, with smoother Apple Intelligence features, more powerful cameras, and faster charging, a model from the iPhone 17 range is definitely worth considering.

For those who want the best cameras, the largest screen, and the longest battery life, the iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max are the smart options. If you prefer a more compact alternative, the iPhone Air with its extra-slim design could be ideal. And if you simply want a reliable current-generation iPhone without going straight for a Pro model, the standard iPhone 17 is a great fit.
