About MediaMarkt: a brief history
Short History
In the late seventies, people bought a new TV at a specialty store, a record at a record shop, and a washing machine at an appliance dealer. Limited choices and relatively high prices were the norm back then. In 1979, the four German founders of MediaMarkt decided it was time to change that and shake up the market. Their idea: a wide range of branded products at the lowest prices in large stores, with striking advertising and a new entrepreneurial company culture, where employees were given more responsibility and growth opportunities than was usual at the time. With one clear focus: always being customer-oriented. MediaMarkt became the first mega-electronics retailer (micro-informatics, multimedia, CD, DVD, video, hi-fi, photo, telecom, and household electronics) where customers were fully taken care of: enormous selection, expert advice, the latest gadgets, and top-quality branded products at guaranteed lowest prices, all under one roof. It's no wonder this concept quickly became a great success. Expansion followed swiftly, first in Germany, but soon also in the rest of Europe. In December 2002, Belgium followed with the first store opening in Antwerp. Today, there are 27 stores in Belgium. MediaMarkt has grown to become the largest electronics retailer in Europe, with around nine hundred stores, over 38,000 employees, in 12 European countries. Each year, millions of people in Belgium find their way to MediaMarkt, either in stores or online.
Customer-Centric – Smart Services
MediaMarkt continues to develop the original customer promise from forty years ago, in line with the wishes of today's customers. The primary focus is on relieving the customer by providing good advice when choosing electronic equipment. But our service goes beyond just purchasing the right product. At the Smartbar in the store, customers can expect various additional services from us. For example, our unique TV calibration service ensures the ultimate viewing experience and saves energy on the calibrated television. Besides expert advice in the store on purchasing the right smartphone, there is a very wide range of phone subscriptions. At the Smartbar, these can be set up immediately, and assistance is available for transferring photos, phone numbers, and other data from the old to the new phone. When purchasing a laptop or tablet, the customer is fully taken care of at the Smartbar. Software can be installed, and the product can be taken home ready to use or delivered at a time convenient for the customer. Additionally, insurance can be arranged directly at the Smartbar, allowing the customer to enjoy their purchased product worry-free. If the screen of a smartphone or tablet breaks, MediaMarkt offers a 48-hour service with free return shipping. Finally, our expert staff at the Smartbar can even check if your current energy contract still suits you or if you can save on it.
The Next Step in Customer Experience - Omnichannel
MediaMarkt has not only grown to become the largest electronics chain but also the leading online electronics provider in Europe. This allows customers to choose how, when, and where they purchase and receive their products. With this omnichannel proposition, MediaMarkt seamlessly integrates physical stores, B-to-B sales, and the online store, offering customers a wide range of options for purchasing a product. In addition to the traditional method of buying and taking a product home from the store, it is also possible to order a product online and pick it up the same day or the next day in the store (click & collect service), order online and have the product delivered within four hours, the same day, or on a day chosen by the customer. In short, MediaMarkt offers customers the advantage of 24/7 online shopping, as well as the opportunity to experience the product in-store, with personal advice from one of our expert sales associates.
