The new energy labels: everything you need to know

It's possible that you may soon find a new energy label alongside the current label on your recently purchased dishwasher, washing machine, or refrigerator. Instead of the familiar labels ranging from A+++ to D, you will now see a label from A to G. This new label doesn't mean that your purchase has suddenly become less efficient in energy consumption. Only the label is changing.

Just what change is happening?

The current energy labels have been updated. Instead of a label with values such as A+++, A++, A+, A, B, C, and D, a new system with labels A, B, C, D, E, F, G will be used from March 2021. The new labels will also feature a QR code, which provides more information about the label.

Two energy efficiency labels show ratings from 'Since 2010' with A to F, and 'Since March 2021' with A to G, plus energy use icons.
  1. By scanning the QR code, consumers will receive more product information. Starting from March 1st, this code will lead to a database managed by the EU.
  2. The new label uses a uniform A-G scale for all products. A+++, A++, and A+ no longer exist.
  3. Energy consumption in kWh will be prominently and uniformly displayed in the middle part of the label.
  4. Various new pictograms provide information about selected product features.

This change will happen first for the following types of appliances:

  • Washing machines.
  • Washer-dryer combinations (excluding dryers).
  • TVs and computer monitors.
  • Refrigerators, freezers, and wine coolers.
  • Dishwashers.

Starting from September 1st, 2021, electric lamps will also carry the new energy label. However, appliances such as dryers, air conditioners, heating devices, (microwave) ovens, and hoods will continue to carry an energy label from A+++ to G.

Why are we getting new energy labels?

The new energy label will be used to demonstrate a clearer distinction between technologically advanced household appliances. Electrical appliances are becoming increasingly energy-efficient, resulting in many appliances currently being labeled as A+++, A++, or A+. With the new rescaling of the labels, fewer appliances will receive the highest A label, allowing for more room to accommodate future technological advancements in appliances.

There is no easy way or rule to transition from the current labels to the new labels. The new labels are based on a new testing method for appliances. It's possible that an A+++ appliance may receive a new label of B or even E. This doesn't mean that the appliance suddenly becomes less energy-efficient. The energy efficiency and performance of the product remain the same; it's only the label that is changing.

What will change for me?

If you soon purchase a new dishwasher, washing machine, or other household appliance, you may discover 2 energy labels in the packaging, introducing you to the new label.

It's possible that the new energy label indicates a different or lower score than the old label. This doesn't mean that your product is less energy-efficient. The product remains the same; it's only the label that is changing.
