The Nintendo Switch 2 is on its way. On 5 June 2025, Nintendo’s brand-new hybrid console arrives, boasting significant technological improvements compared to the original model. Find out all the key information about the Nintendo Switch 2 here.

Introducing the Nintendo Switch 2

The Nintendo Switch 2 is the brand-new successor to the original Nintendo Switch. Just like its predecessor, you can easily connect it to your TV, but you can also play on the go in handheld mode. After 8 years of innovation, Nintendo is unveiling a thoroughly updated model. Inside, you’ll find more powerful hardware, and the design has also been upgraded. The screen is now 7.9 inches and supports a smooth 120 frames per second (fps) in handheld mode. Thanks to the 1080p resolution and HDR support, both light and dark scenes look better than ever. Using the Switch 2 with the included dock? You’ll be able to play your favourite games in 4K and up to 60 fps on your TV.

A new console means new ways to play. The Nintendo Switch 2 brings some remarkable innovations, especially in terms of controls and communication. The new Joy-Con 2 controllers make all the difference. They now attach magnetically to the system, feature much-improved sticks to prevent stick drift and offer a unique new feature: mouse control. In certain games, you can use the Joy-Con 2 just like a computer mouse. Place the controller on its side, use the shoulder button as a click, and move smoothly across various surfaces, including your mouse mat or even your trousers.

Another new feature is the C button on the right Joy-Con 2. This activates GameChat, allowing you to chat with up to 12 people at once. You can share your screen with friends or watch their gameplay live. Connect the separately available Nintendo Switch 2 camera, and others can even see your face while you play. So, you can each play your own game, but it feels as if you’re together in the same room.

Games on the Nintendo Switch 2: what to expect

A new console naturally means a whole range of new games, exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2. And Nintendo is going all out. The biggest launch title is undoubtedly Mario Kart World. In this open-world race, you compete against up to 24 players. Alongside the familiar Grand Prix mode, there’s now also an exciting Knockout mode with longer circuits and new rules. Race solo or explore the world at your own pace with friends. This hit is released on 5 June, alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 itself.

On launch day, you’ll also find Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour in stores, a new title straight from Nintendo’s creative studios. This game teaches you everything about the new features of the console through fun mini games. Expect features that showcase the 4K quality and the 120VRR screen (variable refresh rate). On 17 July, Donkey Kong Bananza arrives, a 3D platformer in the style of Super Mario Odyssey. This time, Donkey Kong is the hero, smashing obstacles with brute force and digging underground in search of hidden treasures.

And there’s more to come. Later in the year, Nintendo will release 3 more exclusive titles for the Nintendo Switch 2. Drag x Drive is a dynamic wheelchair basketball game that makes full use of the new mouse controls. By 'mousing', you move forward, dodge opponents, and score with an accurate shot via the Joy-Con 2. Later in 2025, Kirby Air Riders will be released, the long-awaited sequel to the popular racing game for the Nintendo GameCube. Finally, Nintendo will launch Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment in winter, a prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, where you play as Princess Zelda.

Use Switch 1 games and accessories on your Switch 2

Six video game covers are displayed, including Pokémon Sword and Shield, Super Mario Odyssey, and The Legend of Zelda titles.

You don’t have to leave your favourite Nintendo Switch games behind. On the Switch 2, you can continue playing most Switch 1 titles. Many popular games, such as Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, and Captain Toad’s Treasure Tracker, will even receive free updates for better performance on the new system.

Six game covers are displayed: Super Mario Party Jamboree, Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Metroid Prime 4 Beyond, Pokemon Legends ZA, Zelda Breath of the Wild.

Some classics will be re-released as special Nintendo Switch 2 Editions. Think of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Jamboree, and Kirby and the Forgotten Land. These enhanced versions offer a higher frame rate, improved visuals, and extra content. Already own the original Nintendo Switch games? Then you can upgrade to the Switch 2 Edition. Don’t own them yet? Simply purchase the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of the game separately.

More good news: most Nintendo Switch accessories remain compatible. Your Joy-Con, Pro Controller, and other Bluetooth-compatible accessories also work with the Switch 2. Note: due to the new magnetic attachment system, you can’t physically click the old Joy-Con onto the Switch 2 console, but they still work wirelessly.
