Choosing a smartwatch size: everything you need to know

Smartwatches come in a range of sizes, from extra small to extra large. Depending on your wrist size, how you use your smartwatch and the look you prefer, a different size may suit you best. Find out here which smartwatch size is the best fit for you and what to look out for when making your choice.

Choosing the right smartwatch size: why it matters

A sporty person wears a smartwatch outdoors showing health data, dressed in a pink top and black leggings.

Just like with earbuds or a new pair of glasses, a good fit is the most important factor when choosing a smartwatch. After all, you want your watch to feel secure as well as comfortable all day long.

The right size affects how comfortable your smartwatch feels and how easy the screen is to read. It should also be in proportion with your wrist for a neat, balanced look. If you choose one that’s too large, your smartwatch may feel heavier, shift around more easily and make you constantly aware that you’re wearing it. A smartwatch that’s too small can be uncomfortable too and may be harder to read, especially during exercise.

There are many different smartwatch and activity tracker brands, which means there are also many different smartwatch sizes. Even within the same brand, such as Garmin smartwatches, you’ll find differences in case size. To make things easier, we have grouped the most common sizes into categories from extra small to extra large:

Small (41 mm and under)

A small smartwatch is the best choice if you have a slim wrist. This size sits neatly on the wrist and stays light and comfortable throughout the day. It’s also the right choice if you prefer a subtle or more refined look.

Medium (42 to 44 mm)

In most cases, a medium-sized smartwatch is the right choice. The screen is large enough to read your messages and notifications clearly, while the design is neither too bold nor too small.

Large (45 to 48 mm)

If you prefer a larger display or a more striking design, a large smartwatch is your best option. Most Apple Watches fall into this category. Although larger models are just as suitable for sport, work and everyday use, their designs tend to have a sportier feel.

Extra large (49 mm and above)

If you mainly use your smartwatch as a sports watch and wear it everywhere, an extra-large smartwatch is a smart choice. Larger models are often better able to withstand knocks and are designed with sport and outdoor activities in mind.

Measuring your wrist to find the right smartwatch size

To choose the right smartwatch size, it’s best to measure your wrist circumference first:

  1. Take a measuring tape. If you don’t have one, a strip of paper or a piece of string will do.
  2. Measure your wrist at the wrist bone. If you use paper or string, mark where it meets around your wrist and then measure that length with a ruler.
  3. This number is your wrist circumference, and you can use it to determine the most suitable smartwatch size.

Also pay attention to the difference between the case size and the strap size. The case size tells you how large the watch itself is. The strap size determines how loose or snug your smartwatch sits around your wrist.

Are there differences between smartwatch sizes for women and men?

A black smartwatch with a round face is worn on a wrist; the wearer has a blue-gray shirt in the background.

Smartwatches for men are generally larger than smartwatches for women, both in case size and strap size, because men’s wrists are on average larger and typical men’s designs tend to be slightly sportier. In practice, though, the most important factors are your wrist circumference and your personal preference.

Extra small size: smartwatches for children

A child wears a white smartwatch showing Disney Princess; with the other hand, the child touches the watch in warm sunlight.

If you’re looking for a smartwatch for your child, an extra-small model measuring under 38 mm is the right choice. The watch is light and compact, so it stays comfortably in place while they play and move around.

When choosing the right smartwatch size, start with your wrist circumference: measure your wrist and work out which smartwatch size fits best. Then choose the most suitable case size. This mainly depends on your personal preference: if you prefer a larger display, a larger case is the better option. If you favour a more subtle look, a smartwatch with a smaller case is the right choice.
