Megadeth strove for arena success with their thrash metal and achieved it. On "Countdown to Extinction", Megadeth traded their long, progressive compositions for tight, compactly written and performed songs that were better suited for radio and MTV, and thus for a broad global rock audience. The album reached number 2 on the US Billboard charts and was certified double platinum in 1992. "Countdown to Extinction" was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1992 in the category "Best Metal Performance".
