Ghost of Yōtei is the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, one of PlayStation Studios' most acclaimed open-world games. The game features a completely new story, meaning you don't need to have played the original title to follow along. The focus is on dynamic combat with traditional Japanese weapons, sneaking around like a ninja, and enjoying the impressive environments. Ghost of Yōtei takes place around Mount Yōtei in Ezo, present-day Hokkaido, Japan.
In Ghost of Tsushima, you played Jin Sakai, tasked with liberating Tsushima from Mongol invaders. The sequel leaves that island behind and takes place some 330 years later, in 1603. This time, you play as Atsu, a wandering rōnin driven by revenge. Sixteen years ago, the Yōtei Six murdered her family and left her for dead. Since then, she has had one mission: to track down and eliminate the perpetrators. Along the way around Mount Yōtei, you'll also discover places like Hot Springs and Altars of Reflection, where Atsu can learn new skills.
Besides a new story, there's much to discover in the new area. Like the previous game, Yōtei is packed with side quests that you investigate using the new Clue system to progress. You choose where to go first and how to approach them. For example, Atsu can interrogate locals and gather clues that lead her to snow-capped mountains or a burned-down village. The combat system has also been thoroughly revamped. In addition to her katana, Atsu has additional weapons at her disposal. She has a kusarigama, like Naoe in Assassin's Creed Shadows, but also a spear and even two swords to combat enemies. Each enemy type has its own weaknesses, so it's wise to switch weapons regularly.
Developer Sucker Punch Productions is sticking to a realistic style. Therefore, the Kurosawa Mode returns, which displays the game entirely in black and white as a tribute to director Akira Kurosawa. There's also the Miiki Mode, which makes the action even more bloody as a nod to the director of 12 Assassins, Takashi Miiki. Finally, there's the Watanabe Mode, which transforms the music into lo-fi beats as you journey through Ezo.
