A washing machine and tumble dryer are indispensable in any household but do take up quite a bit of space. To save room, you can opt for a washer-dryer combo or stack your washing machine and tumble dryer. You’ll need a stacking kit for this. Not sure where to start? With this clear step-by-step guide, you’ll stack your washing machine and dryer safely.

Follow these steps to stack your washing machine and tumble dryer

Step 1: get the right essentials

To place your washing machine and tumble dryer on top of each other, you’ll need a universal stacking kit and a spirit level. Ask a second person to help so you can lift the dryer together.

Step 2: place the washing machine first

The washing machine always goes underneath the tumble dryer, not the other way around. A washing machine is much heavier than a dryer and it also vibrates during the spin cycle. By placing the dryer on top, you create a stable setup.

Step 3: level the washing machine

Is your washing machine in the right spot? Check that the appliance is level. This prevents excessive movement and stops the machine from shifting. For extra certainty, you can get vibration dampers or an anti-vibration mat among the washing machine accessories. Place these under the washing machine’s feet.

Step 4: assemble your stacking kit

There are special stacking kits to securely place your washing machine and tumble dryer on top of each other. This kit includes an intermediate piece with anti-slip strips. Assemble the kit according to the instructions and fix the intermediate piece to the top of the washing machine.

Step 5: use a tensioning strap

A stacking kit also includes securing straps to make your stack extra stable. Feed the straps through the slots of the stacking kit and under the washing machine. Make sure you can still easily reach the ratchet so you can tighten the straps firmly later. Do you have an intermediate piece but no securing strap? You can also find separate ratchet straps among our tumble dryer accessories.

Step 6: place your tumble dryer on the washing machine

Do your dryer’s feet fit fully into the appliance’s corners? If so, you can place the dryer on top of the intermediate piece without anti-slip strips. If not, screw the dryer’s feet all the way off and stick an anti-slip strip in each corner of the stacking kit. With 2 people, lift the dryer and set it on the intermediate piece. Now pull the securing straps over the dryer and tighten them with the ratchet.

Is it safe to stack a washing machine and tumble dryer?

A laundry room features a stacked white washer and dryer, a sink with a black faucet, and a wooden shelf unit with clothes.

Stacking a washing machine and tumble dryer is perfectly fine, as long as both appliances are stable. Install your washing machine correctly and always level it for a solid base. Pay close attention to the washing machine’s dimensions as well: if it’s less than 55 centimetres deep, it’s best not to place the dryer on top. The surface area is then too small to support the washing machine and dryer stably. Finally, we recommend protecting your washing machine with an aqua stop. This helps prevent leaks so you can let your washing machine and tumble dryer stand stacked without worries.

Different cabinets for stacking your washing machine and dryer

For a tidy look, you can place your washing machine and tumble dryer in one tall cabinet or in 2 cabinets stacked. If you’re considering such laundry furniture, always check the exact dimensions of your appliances. You don’t want to leave too much space inside the cabinet, to minimise vibrations. If you plan to place your washing machine in a cabinet under the dryer, first check whether this is permitted by the manufacturer. Not sure which washing machine suits you?
