What are the differences between the iPhone 17e and iPhone 16e?

The iPhone e models are the more accessible iPhones within each series. The iPhone 17e fills that role in the iPhone 17 line-up. You get the same core experience as with the standard model, without the extra features of the Pro models. Unlike the iPhone 17 and 16, the differences between the iPhone 17e and 16e are mainly in ease of use and future‑proofing.

The iPhone 17e supports MagSafe, with wireless charging up to 15 watts. This also allows you to use MagSafe‑compatible iPhone accessories. In addition, the iPhone 17e starts at 256 GB of storage, whereas the iPhone 16e is also available in a 128 GB version. If you take lots of photos and videos or download many apps and files, it’s best to choose an iPhone with 256 GB of storage or more. The iPhone 17e also gets the newer A19 chip instead of the A18. With this processor, gaming and working feel smoother, and you have extra headroom for future updates.

What stays the same? Both models have a 6.1‑inch display, a 48 MP camera and a battery that can play up to 26 hours of video. Even so, the A19 chip in the iPhone 17e ensures the hardware runs more smoothly and in some cases even enables extra features compared with the iPhone 16e. Read on to choose the right iPhone for you.

Which iPhone suits you best?

Both the iPhone 16e and 17e have a single 48 MP Fusion camera on the back. Here, ‘Fusion’ means your photo is the result of a high resolution combined with AI that renders everything accurately, even when you zoom in or take a shot in poorer lighting conditions. You can record videos in 4K Dolby Vision at up to 60 fps. On both models, the selfie camera is a 12 MP TrueDepth lens with support for 4K video and 1080p slow motion. Cinematic Mode is exclusive to the iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max.

The biggest difference between the cameras on the 2 smartphones lies in the portrait feature. The 17e offers an improved Portrait mode, allowing you to adjust the background blur during and after taking the photo thanks to stored depth information. What’s more, the 16e mainly recognises people, whereas the iPhone 17e also recognises your dog or cat. This is where the A19 chip really makes the difference for the camera.

In terms of design, the iPhone 17e and iPhone 16e are almost identical, with an aluminium frame, a glass back and a 6.1‑inch Super Retina XDR display. The placement of the Action button and other buttons is also the same. The main difference lies in the glass on the front: the iPhone 17e uses Ceramic Shield 2, which makes it more resistant to scratches than the iPhone 16e, even if you don’t use a screen protector. In addition, the iPhone 17e comes in an extra colour. As well as black and white, it’s also available in soft pink.

The iPhone 17e runs on the newer A19 chip, while the iPhone 16e uses the A18 chip. Both chips have a 6‑core CPU, which simply means your device can handle multiple tasks smoothly at the same time. The A19 is more efficient and more powerful, so apps open faster and you have more headroom for demanding games and future iOS updates. The A19 chip is also optimised for better AI performance, which you’ll notice, for example, in smart photo editing and Apple Intelligence.

In terms of battery life, the iPhone 17e and 16e are the same. Both models can play up to 26 hours of video on a single charge. The big difference lies in charging: the iPhone 17e supports MagSafe up to 15 watts, while the iPhone 16e charges wirelessly via Qi up to 7.5 watts and does not support MagSafe.
