The letter indicates the hardness of a pencil and is tested based on scratches made by the hardest pencil on the glass. Pencils with a hardness ranging from 6B (the softest) to 9H (the hardest) are used. During testing, a pencil is pressed against the screen protector at a 45-degree angle.
