A year has passed since Marie's father died. It is New Year's Eve and she is hoping for a miracle. Life must take a turn for the better. Unfortunately, a very unpleasant surprise awaits her. Marie discovers that her mother, in order to keep the house, has been forced to marry against her will to the repulsive moneylender Mr. Ratter. As a marriage proposal, he gives Marie a doll called Nutcracker. Distraught and desperate, Marie makes a wish. She would give anything to be small and carefree again.
