A group of animal rights activists breaks into a laboratory and frees chimpanzees from their cages to save them, despite a scientist's warnings that the chimpanzees are contagious. As a result of the animal rights activists' actions, a virus carried by the chimpanzees spreads rapidly across Great Britain, infecting countless people. Jim, who fell into a coma shortly before the outbreak of the virus after a cycling accident, wakes up from his coma and discovers that London is deserted. He realizes he is not alone, as there are infected and uninfected people in the city. Jim manages to find more survivors, and they head to Manchester, where a group of British soldiers offers protection to all survivors against the infected. However, Jim and his colleagues have no idea what awaits them.
