Who doesn't dream of being able to travel through time? In 1985, it is finally possible thanks to a genius invention by Dr. Emmett L Brown (Christopher Lloyd). This eccentric inventor has converted a DeLorean DMC-12 sports car into a veritable time machine that can be used to travel to any year. One night he invites his friend and pupil Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) to go for a test drive. Unfortunately, not everything goes quite according to plan and Marty gets stuck in 1955, the time when his parents were young. To make matters worse, the time machine fails, preventing Marty from going back and forcing him to enlist the help of the then much younger Dr. Brown. Moreover, Mary runs into his parents and his mother falls in love with him instead of his father putting Marty’s own existence in jeopardy. Marty must now in a race against time try to repair the damage before it is too late for him and at the same time try to find a way to return… back to the future!Back to the Future is a very entertaining adventure movie full of humor and action. The possibilities and impossibilities of time travel are comically brought to light and the story is very well and smoothly put together. Back to the Future became a big hit in 1985 and a sequel was inevitable. However, Zemeckis and Gale, fearing sequelitis, wanted to write the story themselves and it took several years for that story to be finished. The sequel story then turned out to offer soómany new ideasën that it provided enough material for no less than two sequels. The two sequels, which were shot back-to-back (back-to-back), went even further in exploring the complicated time travel concept. Part two in particular is very complex compared to its predecessor because it travels both to the future, and also back to 1955. In 1955, Marty must be very careful because he has been there before and he must not run into his “me” from the first film. This results in a unique mix between the two films, with the viewer essentially reliving some of the same scènes, but from a completely different perspective. No film to date has managed to match this clever screenplay puzzle. Finally, the third part is a bit simpler and more human in scope, taking us back to the Wild West of 1885, where Dr. Brown falls in love and the annoying drawbacks of time travel become increasingly apparent. All three films are highly entertaining and can now be labeled modern classics. That Universal has now released the films bundled in a box set is therefore a very good thing!
