John Form has found the perfect gift for his pregnant wife Mia; a beautiful vintage doll in a white wedding dress. However, for very long she will not be able to enjoy the doll, which bears the name Annabelle. One night, John and Mia's neighbors are raided by members of a satanic cult, with spilled blood and terror not the only thing they leave behind. In fact, the cultists have summoned a demonic entity that now hides in the doll Annabelle.

It has been several years since the tragic death of the daughter of a doll maker and his wife. Meanwhile, they welcome a nun and several girls from a closed orphanage into their home. Soon they become the target of the dollmaker's possessed creation, Annabelle.

To keep Annabelle from doing more damage, paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren place the possessed doll inside the locked artifact room in their home. Things go awry, however, when Ed and Lorraine leave home for a day and leave Mary Ellen to watch their daughter Judy. A friend of Mary Ellen comes over and enters the dangerous room, whereupon she frees the infamous doll. As a result, Annabelle wakes up all the evil spirits in the room.
