A new Nintendo Switch and immediately a new Professor Layton adventure: Professor Layton and the New World of Steam. Puzzle fans have been looking forward to this for quite some time. In this game, you once again set off with the familiar duo of Hershel Layton and his apprentice Luke Triton to unravel the mysteries of Steam Bison.

What is the story of Professor Layton and the New World of Steam?

High in a balloon basket, the man and boy look out over a sprawling steam city packed with rooftops, chimneys and winding streets.

In Professor Layton and the New World of Steam, Hershel Layton is reunited with Luke, who has called on the help of his former mentor. The game is set in Steam Bison, a fictional town in the United States where the steam engine is on the rise. In this world of progress, not everyone manages to keep up. The ghost of a gunslinger, Gunman Joe, warns against this technological advancement. But is it really a ghost, or is something else going on? It’s up to you, together with Professor Layton and Luke, to unravel this mystery.

The gameplay of New World of Steam

In the Professor Layton games, you solve mysteries by looking around, talking to people and tackling puzzles. The gameplay remains a classic point-and-click puzzle experience. The earlier games featured an average of 150 puzzles in the main story, supplemented by bonus puzzles. Think riddles, logic challenges and maths problems. If you find things tricky, you can collect coins along the way to unlock hints. The more puzzles you solve, the more areas and extra challenges you unlock as you gradually work to uncover the mystery.

Although Layton games don’t offer farming, crafting or life-sim elements, they’re still considered cosy games. No fast-paced action or racing but instead puzzling at your own pace with charming stories and characters.

The characters of New World of Steam

The main characters are Hershel Layton and Luke Triton. Professor Layton is known for his sharp mind and iconic top hat and is often called in when a mystery needs to be solved. His apprentice Luke travelled with him for many years, until he decided to go his own way in America. In New World of Steam, he once again calls on the help of his former mentor, so this time you’ll be setting off with both characters. Along the way, you’ll meet a variety of colourful figures who either help you or present you with new puzzles.
