Where to place your combined detector?

A combined detector is a smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector in one. Smoke rises and carbon monoxide disperses in the air. Therefore, there is no universally perfect location; the best location depends on your situation.

In the Netherlands, it is legally required to have a smoke detector on every living floor and in enclosed spaces through which an escape route passes.

In addition to complying with legal requirements, we advise you to optimize fire safety in your home by installing smoke detectors in strategic locations:

• Areas with combustion appliances: Place combined detectors in rooms with potential carbon monoxide sources, such as boilers, gas heaters, water heaters, or fireplaces. CO is colorless and odorless, so early detection is essential.
• Escape routes: Install smoke detectors in hallways and near stairs, especially if they lead to bedrooms. This way, smoke is detected quickly and you can react in time.
• Bedrooms: Install smoke detectors in or near bedrooms so the alarm can alert residents even at night.
• Living rooms: A combined detector in the living room is important, especially if there is a fireplace or other heat sources.
