Twelve-year-old T.S. Spivet lives with his family on a ranch in Montana. His mother is obsessed with insects, his father is an unadulterated cow-boy and his 14-year-old sister dreams of becoming Miss America. He himself is a true genius, fascinated by cartography and scientific experiments. One day he gets a call from the Smithsonian in Washington. He has won the prestigious Baird Prize for one of his inventions, and he gets to receive it at an awards ceremony. Spivet immediately packs his suitcase (including telescope and four compasses), writes a farewell bill to his parents and sets off alone on a miraculous journey to the other side of the United States.
