When the world of Concordia is shattered into many islands by a mysterious disaster, it is up to Mario and Luigi to reconnect them. Together, they embark on a journey with the Beanstalk – part sailboat, part island – and launch themselves via cannon to various islands with diverse environments, from tropical rainforests to bustling cities. In the course of their adventure, the brothers meet helpful new friends like Connie and Trufvolt (who is absolutely not a pig), as well as familiar characters from the Mushroom Kingdom, such as Peach and Bowser.

To reconnect the shattered parts of Concordia, players must harness the power of the brotherly bond between Mario and Luigi. This allows them to use duo actions, such as transforming into a ball together, or melting or freezing obstacles with fire and ice balls. During turn-based battles, they can use duo attacks, such as the mighty Thunder Pump, and players must use the right timing to effectively defeat enemies with attacks, dodges, and counters.

Players can also assign battle stickers to the brothers to give Mario and Luigi extra abilities, allowing them to hit multiple enemies with a shockwave, or hit flying enemies extra hard, for example. Players can experiment with combinations of different battle stickers to use multiple effects simultaneously.

The power of Luigi’s inventive mind comes into play in the game with Luigi’s Intrusions, which can be very useful when exploring environments and defeating bosses. Although his ideas are often far-fetched, they do help Mario to solve puzzles, grab items, and inflict significant damage on enemies.
