First, decide in how many steps you would like to fade the hairstyle. After all, that determines the number of "zones" and also the number of combs you need.

The fade attachment combs are used to fade hair that has been trimmed with two consecutive attachment combs. For example, use the fade attachment comb #2 - 3 (6 - 9 mm) to gradually fade hair that has been trimmed with the #2 and #3 combs. The fade attachment combs are marked with symbols indicating on which side of the head they are used and in which direction they should be used. Attach the appropriate fade attachment comb and work horizontally from the side of the head to the center of the back of the head. Hold the clippers at the transition between zones to merge the two lengths, left to center back and right to center back, horizontally. When one side is done, attach the other fade attachment comb and repeat on the other side of the head.
