He realizes that he can take advantage of his enforced immobility by studying the behavior of the building's occupants in Greenwich Village. His observations lead him to believe that Lars Thorwald, his neighbor across the street, murdered his wife. His fiancée does not believe him at first, but eventually gets caught up in the game.
