The series revolves around 17-year-old Joshua "J" Cody who moves in with his dissolute family in Southern California after his mother dies of an overdose. The clan is led by iron lady Janine "Smurf" Cody and her right-hand man Baz, who runs the business and makes the decisions. Furthermore, Joshua also has to deal with Pope, the oldest and most dangerous of the Cody brothers; the tough and fearless Craig and Deran, the restless and youngest of the family.

The series is based on the 2010 Australian thriller that was nominated for an Oscar. Animal Kingdom has been renewed for a 3rd season. In 2017, the series was nominated for a Saturn Award as Best Action/Thriller TV Series and a GoldenReel Award for Best Sound Editing for TV Series.
