On April 26, 1986, a massive explosion occurs at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine, releasing radioactive material into Belarus, Russia and Ukraine and as far away as Scandinavia and Western Europe. Valery Legasov, a prominent Soviet nuclear physicist, is among the first to understand the magnitude of the unprecedented disaster. Soviet Deputy Prime Minister Boris Shcherbina is appointed by the Kremlin to head the government committee on Chernobyl in the hours immediately following the accident. Ulana Khomyuk, a Soviet nuclear physicist, sets out to solve the mystery of what led to the Chernobyl disaster.
