Piper Chapman is a young woman whose life changes dramatically when she has to go to prison for a crime she committed 10 years earlier with her then-boyfriend. She has since left her wild bisexual life far behind and is engaged to Larry, a decent man who offers her a stable life.

Piper will have to serve 15 months in a women's prison populated by such diverse types as Russian prisoners, an activist nun and a converted fireman. Soon she learns the rules of prison life, but when she meets an old acquaintance, the old, reckless Piper slowly creeps back to the surface....
