It’s important to clean your kitchen appliances regularly, even if it’s not always the most enjoyable task. But how do you clean your hob, barbecue, freezer, air fryer or oven? In this article, we’ll explain it to you.

How do you clean the cooker, the hob and the extractor hood?

Do you want to clean the stove or the hob? First make a bowl of warm soapy water with a bit of dish soap. Remove the pan supports and cooled gas burners from the cooker and leave them to soak in warm water for 20 to 30 minutes. The pan supports can also go in the dishwasher if you like. Wipe the cooker or hob with a damp cloth and the soapy water and clean it thoroughly. Then dry it with a dry cloth so it’s nice and clean and no marks are left behind. Do not use scouring agents on the hob, as these can cause scratches on the surface.

To clean the extractor hood, first fill a saucepan with water and lemon juice and bring it to the boil while the extractor hood is switched on. The hood will be degreased as it absorbs the steam from the water and lemon juice. Then wipe the extractor hood with a damp cloth. The filters of the extractor hood can go in the dishwasher at 40 degrees on a short programme. The colour of the filter may change, but this does not affect how it works.

How do you clean a barbecue?

Cleaning a barbecue is very important. If you don’t do it straight away, the next time you light it the barbecue will produce smoke and your meat and vegetables will burn. First remove the large food residues from the BBQ while the grill is still warm. Use a brush that is suitable for barbecues, so you don’t damage the grill and the food comes off easily. Then use warm soapy water and a sponge or cloth to remove the remaining dirt.

Once the coals have gone out, take them out of the barbecue and wipe away the ash. When the bowl is empty, use a cloth and soapy water to clean the barbecue. Avoid scouring agents. Prevention is sometimes better than cure: before you start barbecuing, grease the grill with olive or sunflower oil so the meat doesn’t stick to it. If you don’t have any oil, you can also rub the grill with a bit of lemon juice.

How do you clean a freezer?

Before you clean the freezer, it’s useful to check which products are still inside. Some items must not be refrozen once they’ve been defrosted. Then switch off the freezer and keep the remaining products as cool as possible, for example in a cool box.

Have a dry cloth and a bucket ready. Make sure all ice and water are completely removed by soaking it up with the cloth and wringing it out over the bucket. Then clean the inside – and the outside if necessary – with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Rinse again with hot water and then dry everything with a dry cloth. Make sure there is no moisture left in the freezer when you switch it back on, otherwise ice will form. Finally, put your products back. That way, you’re sorted again for a while.

How do you clean a deep fryer?

Make sure the deep fryer is unplugged and the oil has cooled down before you start cleaning. Pour the old frying fat into a plastic bag or an empty bottle. Then wipe all the remaining oil out of the pan with kitchen paper. In the meantime, bring some water to the boil. Take a bowl, put a dishwasher tablet in it and pour the boiling water over it. Once the tablet has dissolved, pour the solution into the deep fryer. Fill the pan with water to over halfway. Switch the appliance on at 90 degrees and leave the mixture to work for about half an hour. Place the basket in the pan as well. Afterwards, clean everything with a wire brush and dry all parts with a microfibre cloth.

An air fryer can also prepare snacks just like a deep fryer, but it uses hot air instead of frying fat.

How do you clean an oven or microwave?

To use your oven or microwave safely and efficiently, regular cleaning is essential. Avoid the build-up of burnt-on or caked-on food residues. If this does happen, follow the steps below:

  • Remove all dust and loose dirt from the oven using a vacuum cleaner.
  • Preheat the oven to 200°C and switch it off once it has reached the set temperature. Place an ovenproof dish with water and lemon in the oven and leave it for half an hour to help degrease the interior. Then use kitchen paper or a damp microfibre cloth to wipe away the grease.
  • Put the oven rack in the dishwasher. If it doesn’t fit, fill a container with warm water and a dishwasher tablet and leave the rack to soak for a few hours. Rinse it thoroughly before placing it back in the oven.
