Which TV should you choose?

There's nothing better than ending a busy day with your favourite movie, series or a sports game. Especially if you choose a TV that completely suits your needs and space. From Full HD TVs to watch the news or soap opera, to 8K OLED devices that bring the latest PS5 games to life, there's a TV to suit your needs. In this guide, we'll help you get started.

How big should the screen of your TV be?

The screen size of your TV has a big impact on your viewing experience. If you choose a screen that is too small, you will miss details. If you go for a screen that is too big, the image can be overwhelming and tiring for your eyes. To choose the right screen, first determine the viewing distance to your TV.

Determine the viewing distance to your TV

First, measure the distance between your seat and the place where you want to place the TV. That distance determines which size TV best suits your space. A handy tip: divide the distance to the TV in centimetres by 2. The result gives you a good indication of the suitable screen size.

Pay close attention to the viewing angle and reflection

If your room has a lot of windows or light sources, it can cause distracting reflections on the screen. In this case, choose a TV with a wide viewing angle and an anti-glare layer so that the image remains clear and clearly visible from any position.

Do you hang the TV on the wall, or do you put it on a piece of furniture?

By hanging your TV on the wall, you save space while creating a modern and sleek look. Make sure you choose a thin model and a sturdy, fitting wall mount. The disadvantage is that you’re less flexible: moving or turning is more difficult once the TV is hanging. If you prefer to place the TV on a cabinet or TV cabinet, you have more freedom. You can position the TV differently more easily. The furniture should then be sturdy enough to safely support the weight of your TV.

Tip: hang or position your TV so that the centre of the screen is at eye level when you sit down comfortably. This way you prevent neck complaints and look the most relaxed.

Where exactly do you place your TV?

Every room requires a different TV: from large and impressive in the living room to compact and practical in the bedroom. For those who want to watch TV anywhere, there are even outdoor devices.

Living room

Your living room is usually the room where you can put the largest screen and where you watch TV with others most often. That's why we recommend at least a 55-inch screen here. In larger living rooms, you can also opt for a 65-inch TV or even a 75-inch set. This is how you create a home cinema experience.

Bedroom

In a bedroom, it’s often more pleasant to use a smaller screen, because the viewing distance is usually shorter. A 32-inch TV or 43-inch set fits best here. This format prevents the image from dominating.

Tip: it's best to hang or place this TV a bit higher than in your living room. For example, between 110 and 130 centimetres from the floor to the centre of the screen. Because you usually watch TV semi-landscape in this room, that higher position creates a natural viewing angle.

Do you want to watch television outside, for example during sporting events or movie nights? Then choose a special outdoor TV that is resistant to moisture, dust and direct sunlight, so that the image remains clear even outside.

What image resolutions are there for TVs?

The resolution of your TV determines how sharp and detailed the image looks. The higher the resolution, the more pixels there are on the screen, and the more realistic movies, series and games appear.

HD Ready

HD Ready is the lowest resolution available. This resolution is especially suitable for small TVs up to about 32 inches, for example in a children's room, kitchen or caravan. For everyday programs such as the news, this image resolution is sufficient, but on larger screens you can clearly see that the image is less sharp, and details are lost. For a modern living room TV, HD Ready is often too limited.

Full HD

A Full HD TV was the standard for years and delivers a clearly sharper picture than HD Ready. With more than 2 million pixels, this resolution is perfectly suitable for screens from 32 to 50 inches and for those who mainly watch TV shows or stream a movie every now and then. However, on larger screens, Full HD can look a bit grainy compared to 4K. Even if you sit close to the TV, this image resolution is not sharp enough.

4K

4K is the most popular resolution today and a smart choice for most families. With more than 8 million pixels, the image is 4 times sharper than Full HD. This resolution is fine for 50-inch TVs and above, as it allows you to really take advantage of the extra detail. Streaming services such as Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime offer their latest content in 4K as standard. 4K is also the norm for games on consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

8K

8K TVs boast more than 33 million pixels and deliver exceptionally sharp images, even on screens 75 inches and larger. The resolution is so high that you can hardly distinguish individual pixels even up close. In practice, 8K is especially interesting for those who want to get the latest technology or want a very large screen. The range of native 8K content is still very limited: usually the image is upscaled from 4K or Full HD.

What picture quality should your television have?

The picture quality of your TV determines how realistic, bright, and colourful your images look. Depending on the technology you choose, your viewing experience will change significantly. Below, we explain each type of image quality.

LED and mini-LED

LED TVs use an LED-backlit LCD panel, which guarantees a clear and sharp image. LED is especially a good choice if you’re looking for a decent screen to watch the news or TV series, for example, without too many extras. Mini-LED goes a step further. The backlight is divided into thousands of smaller LEDs that dim per zone. As a result, you get a much sharper contrast and deeper blacks than with standard LEDs.

OLED

OLED TVs are loved by movie buffs and gamers. With OLED, the pixels are self-luminous, making black really black and colours looking more intense and realistic. The viewing angles of an OLED TV are also excellent. You retain the image quality, even when you look at the screen at an angle. OLED is best enjoyed in the evening movies or series in a dark or dimmed room.

QLED

QLED is an imaging technique developed by Samsung. This uses so-called 'quantum dots' that enable extra brightness and a larger colour gamut. This makes a QLED TV very suitable for bright living rooms, where OLED can sometimes fall just short in brightness. Colours pop off the screen and sports matches, games and shows also look lively in a bright room. The black levels are usually slightly less deep than with OLED.

HDR

HDR is not a separate screen technology, but an additional picture optimisation that modern TVs increasingly support. With HDR, a television can display both dark and light images in much more detail at the same time. Colours are also shown more richly and naturally. HDR is especially noticeable with movies and series from streaming services like Netflix and Disney+, as long as both your content and your TV support HDR (e.g., HDR10, HDR10+, or Dolby Vision).

What are you going to use the TV for?

What you use the TV for largely determines which type and size suits you best. Do you mainly watch standard channels, stream movies and series, or do you want to game intensively? Here, we'll explain which TV properties are important for each situation.

For watching regular channels

If you mainly watch live TV via standard channels and don't need many extras, a compact TV of basic quality without high-end features will suffice. A smaller size with Full HD resolution is often sufficient, especially in smaller living rooms.

For streaming movies and series

Do you want easy access to Netflix, Disney+, YouTube, and other streaming services? Choose a smart TV with pre-installed apps and a reliable operating system. 4K resolution creates an extra sharp and enjoyable experience when watching movies and series.

For movies in your home theatre

For the true movie lover who wants to create a home cinema experience, a large screen (at least 55 inches) with 4K or 8K resolution is recommended. Combine this with OLED or QLED technology for intense colours, deep black levels and optimal sharpness. This way, you can enjoy every detail, and the image will look spectacular, even in dark scenes.

For gaming

An optimal gaming experience requires different properties from your TV. Pay special attention to a high refresh rate of at least 100 hertz to improve motion sharpness. HDMI 2.1 ports are important for connecting to the latest consoles, such as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, because they guarantee smooth images and fast response times. It’s therefore best to choose a specific gaming TV.

For watching sports matches

Fast action and changing camera movements are characteristic of sports broadcasting. A TV with a high refresh rate of at least 100Hz and advanced image processing displays smooth images without blur or motion blur. QLED TVs are often strong in this thanks to their brightness and vibrant colours, even in bright rooms.

Many modern TVs use AI to automatically optimise picture and sound. For example, the TV itself adjusts the brightness based on the ambient light in your room and adjusts the colour palette and contrast according to what you watch. This always guarantees an optimal viewing experience without having to manually change settings.

What connection options are there for your TV?

Make sure your TV has enough HDMI ports for all your peripherals, such as a game console or soundbar. In addition, USB ports are useful for playing media files from external storage. Bluetooth functionality is a plus if you want to connect wireless headphones or speakers to your TV.
